Lemosho vs Machame Route: Which Kilimanjaro Route Should You Choose?

Lemosho and Machame both join Kilimanjaro’s southern circuit and eventually pass Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu, yet they feel different in the first half and are commonly sold with different itinerary lengths. The right choice depends on acclimatization time, budget, scenery, crowd preference and your travel dates.

Lemosho in simple terms

Lemosho starts on Kilimanjaro’s western side and crosses the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit. The eight-day version spreads the early altitude gain across more stages and is one of the most popular choices for travelers prioritizing acclimatization.

Machame in simple terms

Machame starts from the south in dense rainforest and climbs relatively quickly to the Shira Plateau. It is famous for dramatic scenery and the Barranco Wall. The route is often offered in six or seven days; the seven-day version gives more time than the compact six-day schedule.

Which route is quieter?

Lemosho can feel quieter on its first western stages, but after Shira it merges with other southern routes and camps become busier. Machame is popular from the beginning. If solitude is a major goal, the Northern Circuit may be worth considering instead.

Which route is better for acclimatization?

The itinerary length matters more than the route name alone. An eight-day Lemosho normally gives more acclimatization time than a six-day Machame. A seven-day Machame can be a good compromise for fit trekkers who want the Machame approach with an extra day.

Do both routes include Barranco Wall?

Yes. Both standard itineraries use the southern circuit and normally climb the Barranco Wall before continuing through Karanga toward Barafu. The wall is a steep scramble but not technical rock climbing.

Choosing between them

Choose Lemosho if you want a longer western approach and can invest more days. Choose Machame if you want the classic southern route and need a slightly shorter schedule. In either case, choose the number of days based on acclimatization rather than price alone.
