Kilimanjaro Packing List: Essential Gear for a Successful Climb

Kilimanjaro crosses several climate zones in less than a week, so packing is about layering. You need clothing that works in warm rainforest, windy moorland, cold high camp and freezing summit conditions without carrying unnecessary weight.

Footwear and socks

Use waterproof hiking boots that are already broken in. Bring several pairs of trekking socks, liner socks if you normally use them, camp shoes and gaiters for mud, dust or snow depending on conditions.

Layering system

A practical system includes moisture-managing base layers, trekking shirts, fleece or insulated mid-layers, a warm down or synthetic jacket, waterproof shell jacket and waterproof trousers. Summit night normally requires several layers together.

Hands, head and face

Pack a warm hat, sun hat, buff or neck gaiter, liner gloves and insulated outer gloves. Sunglasses with good UV protection are essential at altitude and around snow.

Sleeping and camp gear

A warm sleeping bag rated for sub-zero mountain conditions is important on camping routes. Trekking poles, a headlamp with spare batteries, a duffel for porter-carried gear and a daypack for personal items are standard equipment.

Hydration and personal care

Carry enough bottle/bladder capacity for the day, lip balm with sun protection, sunscreen, personal medications and a small hygiene kit. Follow your guide’s water instructions rather than drinking untreated mountain water.

Test everything before Tanzania

Do not arrive with brand-new boots, an unfamiliar backpack or an untested layering system. Walk in your footwear, use your poles and practice packing your daypack before the trip. Comfort problems at sea level become bigger problems after several mountain days.
