Tanzania Safari Packing List: What to Bring for Game Drives

A good Tanzania safari packing list is light, practical and built around changing temperatures rather than fashion. Early mornings can be cool, midday can be hot, and dust or rain can appear depending on the season. Most travelers need far less luggage than they initially plan to bring.

Clothing

Pack lightweight shirts, comfortable trousers or shorts, a warm fleece or light jacket for early mornings, a rain layer in wetter periods and one nicer casual outfit for lodge evenings. Neutral colors are practical for dust and photography.

Footwear

Closed walking shoes or trainers are enough for most vehicle-based safaris. Heavy hiking boots are unnecessary unless your itinerary includes substantial walking or trekking.

Sun and insect protection

Bring a wide-brim hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen and personal insect repellent. A reusable water bottle is useful if your operator supplies refill water.

Camera and power

Binoculars dramatically improve wildlife viewing even if you are not a photographer. Bring spare camera batteries, memory cards and a power bank. Many safari vehicles have charging points, but you should not depend on them as your only power source.

Documents and money

Keep passport, insurance details, flight information and emergency contacts accessible. Carry some cash for tips and small purchases, while larger payments should follow the method agreed with your operator.

What not to overpack

Large hard-shell suitcases can be difficult on safari, especially when domestic flights have strict luggage limits. Soft-sided bags are generally easier. Leave camouflage-style military clothing and unnecessary valuables at home.
