Zanzibar is one of the easiest ways to slow down after a Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro climb, but the ideal stay depends on whether you want pure beach rest, Stone Town history, snorkeling, sailing or a mix of everything.

Three days: a quick island introduction

Three days works when your international schedule is tight. Focus on one cultural day in Stone Town/spice areas and one coastal or marine experience rather than trying to tour the entire island.

Five days: the balanced option

Five days allows two major excursions and still leaves breathing room. You can combine Stone Town, a spice visit, a Safari Blue-style sailing day, Mnemba-area snorkeling and a beach evening without feeling constantly in transit.

Seven days: a true beach holiday

A week gives time for Jozani Forest, multiple coastal areas and at least one completely unscheduled beach day. This is especially attractive after a physically demanding Kilimanjaro climb.

Where to stay

Stone Town is best for history, restaurants and short cultural access. North and east coast resorts are better for a classic beach stay. Split stays can work on longer itineraries but may not be worthwhile on a three-day trip.

Tides and sea activities

Indian Ocean tides strongly affect some beaches and boat excursions. Snorkeling, sailing and dolphin areas also depend on wind and sea state, so a quality itinerary allows the order of activities to change when necessary.

You can fly from northern Tanzania to Zanzibar after safari, saving a long overland/ferry combination. When planning the final day, allow enough transfer and airport time rather than placing a major excursion immediately before your flight.
